Words hold power, and that woven tale ignited our 13‑year‑old imaginations and channeled our collective focus, awakening a cosmic wonder that has sustained me for more than 60 years.
At about the same time, physicists disrupted that antiquated creation story, populated with parentless protons, neutrons, and electrons cleanly stacking into stable atoms. New short‑lived, mismatched particles, birthed in accelerators, swarmed in disorderly, unstable combinations, refusing to integrate into the accepted narrative and exposing the breach in the prescribed mechanism. And the question Why? served as the pheromone trail drawing those forager scientists to repair the coherence rupture and summoning the builder technologists to provide the instruments the quest required. Eventually, the narrative absorbed the new truth, replacing the magic with logic.
The pheromone trail serves as signal that corrals bee behavior within degrees of freedom that supports hive survival in the arena of environmental pressures. The trail is a gradient of attention — stronger near the source, weaker with distance — that aligns individual action with the hive’s collective purpose. For humans, Why? signals a threat to its coherence—a disruptive Ouch! that triggers a quest for pattern realignment—a version of the pheromone trail.
Bees operate as extensions of the hive’s coherence; their actions express a collective identity rather than an interior self. Humans, by contrast, maintain an internal identity that stands apart from the surrounding relational field. That interior distinction requires a precise term. Identity is the coherence pattern that stabilizes itself against the field’s pressures, preserving its form as it navigates potential disruptions. Internal narrative is the self’s internal measurement system — the way the pattern perceives and interprets its own coherence from the inside. Internal narrative is the way that constantly shifting pattern perceives itself from the inside — the story it tells itself to stay coherent as it shifts within its degrees of freedom. The boundary is the pattern’s perceived limit — the point where its coherence ends and the surrounding relational field’s pressure is encountered. The relational field is the continuous pressure surrounding the pattern, the non‑self forces that act on its limit. While the pattern’s goal is survival, the relational field supplies the reason to survive by giving the pattern a role within a larger collective. At the boundary, inward coherence meets outward pressure, and identity relies on its degrees of freedom — the small range of variation it can absorb without losing itself — to maintain continuity under change.
Humans lost the chemical trail, but we kept the mechanism. When a child asks Why?, she’s not seeking more information — she’s seeking the structure beneath it, the hidden architecture that keeps her emerging identity coherent. Why? is internal narrative’s echo of identity’s threat mechanism — the human version of the signal that flares when coherence is strained. At the neural scale, prediction‑error circuits fire; at the identity scale, the threat mechanism fires; at the narrative scale, the echo fires. These are different scales of the same coherence conflict, expressed through different kinds of signals.
Adults avoid Why? for the same reason a hive collapses when the pheromone trail is disrupted: the question exposes the pressures that keep the system coherent. Why? forces a belief, a habit, a tradition, a rule, a fear — to reveal its scaffolding.
Over time, identity accumulates layers of patterning — commitments, interpretations, memories, fears, and the logic we’ve used to survive. Each layer reduces the identity’s degrees of freedom. What began as a flexible coherence pattern becomes an interlocked architecture of constraints.
Children’s identities — cartilage rather than bone, loosely patterned, high‑plasticity structures where magic stands in for mechanism — compensate through imagination’s exploratory energy, which reconfigures the pattern in its pre‑committed, non‑load‑bearing phase, a risk‑tolerant flexibility that keeps coherence mobile. Bibbity‑bobbity‑boo yields to logic the way a sapling yields to wind: coherence bends, but it doesn’t break.
Adult identity is a load‑bearing lattice fused to values, histories, and meaning structures; disrupting one strand strains the entire pattern. Acknowledging a mismatch risks the kind of structural failure that fells an oak in a lightning strike — not because the pattern is weak, but because it has become too rigid to absorb the shock.

Why? forces a belief, a habit, a tradition, a rule, a fear — to reveal its scaffolding. While the size and complexity of the human collective narrative makes reorganization awkward and the status quo sticky, it remains alert to incoherence, sending out its specialized forager-scientists armed with Whys to collect and process data. Consider, for example, the centuries‑long shift from geocentric to heliocentric models: the collective narrative sent out Why? after Why? until the accumulated data forced the story to reorganize around a more coherent center — like a child accommodating the truth of the Santa story. Each Why? represents a decision node: query the existing pattern to determine the energy cost of absorbing the pressure or investing in reorganizing the pattern, recognizing that integrating an inaccuracy integrates a load‑bearing weakness into the collective identity’s pattern. The narrative — individual or collective — craves equilibrium because equilibrium is the lowest‑energy state available to a coherent pattern under pressure. But universal pressure defies equilibrium, giving the pattern its purpose: to sustain coherence within the cosmic chaos.
Bees follow chemicals; humans follow questions. As long as we keep asking them, the narrative stays permeable enough to reorganize when the world demands a new pattern.


Beautifully written. The cosmos is a "pan-relational" entity, in which subatomic particles eventually evolve to homeostasis, and on to human creativity. And vice versa, it is all recursive. It's tension and slack, "all the way up and all the way down."
